It is always important to consider what is happening elsewhere in the World and where possible learn from it. When it comes to raising funds for tech start-ups, the US seems to consistently lead the way.
This article on the involvement of celebrities in tech investments caught my eye. $2bn is a not insubstantial sum. It compares very well against the totality of angel investment in 2015 in the UK, let alone tech angel investment. Celebrities can bring far more than the wealth they invest. For a tech product that needs market reach, a celebrity angel investor could provide a significant boost.
Are we doing enough in the UK to attract celebrities into angel investing? In the North West, should we be focussing on our home grown celebrities and the draw of Media City to better connect our celebrities to the opportunities for investment that exist here?
In 2015, celebrities invested around $2 billion across 101 deals to private technology companies.
