For those who have spent years collecting, trading and perfecting their World Cup sticker books it may be surprising to learn that Seattle based start up, Player Tokens, has given the sticker book a digital makeover.
Player Tokens’ have agreements with the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) which has created crypto-collectibles for fans featuring all 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams and now the US Women’s National Team Players Association (USWNTPA).
Player Tokens can be bought using a credit card, either individually or in packs featuring three players for US$3.99. The Player tokens are non-fungible, meaning each token is unique based on its specific characteristics, including scarcity and rarity, a novel use of blockchain technology.
Token Players have timed this partnership to coincide with the build up to the Women's World Cup in 2019 and see an opportunity for innovative commercialisation in the Women's game. We will be watching eagerly to see if this use of blockchain technology excites the imagination of sporting collectible enthusiasts.
"There is an untapped market for women's sports collectibles and we are proud to be trailblazers in partnering with the USWNTPA to develop Player Tokens for each of the current members of the team,"
