The cost of a death certificate is increasing across England and Wales from 16th February 2019. This is an additional expense for bereaved families at a difficult time. It is estimated that more than half a million people die each year in England and Wales, so the price increase is likely to bring in millions of pounds.
Families registering a death will now be charged £11 for each certificate, up from £4. Even if the deceased person's affairs are fairly simple bereaved families may well require five or ten certificates. If the latter, the cost will rise from £40 to £110 for bereaved relatives at a testing time.
