Research has revealed that you are 75% more likely to get divorced if you have a close friend who is also divorced.

There is still a stigma in some groups and communities attached to divorce. It is therefore not surprising that seeing a close friend or family member separate can make you more open to the idea of separating if you are unhappy in your relationship.

It is not uncommon for clients to refer to the financial settlement that their friend of family member received upon divorce. In England and Wales the court has wide discretion in relation to financial settlements. This means that even where financial circumstances seem similar the financial settlement can seem quite different.

It is always best to take advice from a specialist family lawyer if you are in doubt as to your legal position.
