The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme online portal finally ‘went live’ on Monday and employers were able to commence submitting their first claims under the scheme.

Since the Chancellor announced the scheme on 20 March there have been several updates to the various guidance notes produced by the Government, as well as a Treasury Direction. The scheme has gradually evolved and although some uncertainty remains, the opening of the portal is a significant step forward.

Initial reports are positive and in the first day alone 185,000 claims were submitted, totalling £1.5 billon. The data collected has also revealed that those who claimed have placed 1,300,00 employees on furlough leave.

Thousands of HMRC staff members have worked overtime and even come out of retirement to assist with the scheme, with 9,500 being deployed solely to deal with queries.

The portal is able to process 450,000 claims per hour and payment will be made to employers within 6 days of submitting the claim.
